Located on 2nd Street in downtown Crested Butte, this community-owned not-for-profit organization grooms over 40km of spectacularly beautiful trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
The trails, which encompass the outskirts of the historic district and up to Mt Crested Butte; the old mining site at Peanut Lake and out to Magic Meadows and into some serious, hard-core backcountry are groomed for both classic and skate skiing to provide facilities for all levels of ability.
The centre also boasts an ice skating rink and sledding hill and offers all the necessary equipment for rent (including snowpaws for kids under 50lbs) at extremely reasonable prices.
If you’re planning to make use of the ice rink be sure to phone their ‘ice-line’ for open skate times: 970-349-0974.
Throughout the winter season the centre offers twice-daily lessons (at 10:30am and 1:30pm) as well as private & group lessons, ½ and full day backcountry tours, lunchtime group tours to Magic Meadows (on Wednesdays) and even the occasional Moonlit tour!
If you’re looking for a truly one-of-a-kind wilderness experience, enquire about spending a night in the Forest Queen Hut which is located at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic, (a tiny, rustic township approximately 4 miles away). The hut sleeps 7, has an outdoor toilet and no running water – have fun!
